Cork and rubber gasket sheet are both cut to the same shapes for the same joints, which makes it easy to assume either one will do. The two materials behave very differently once they're under a flange and exposed to real operating conditions — compressibility, temperature range and chemical resistance all diverge, and getting the specification wrong shows up as a leak, not a paperwork error.
What each material is made from
Cork gasket sheet is made from natural cork granules bound into sheet form, sometimes on its own and sometimes combined with a rubber binder to make rubberized cork sheet. Rubber gasket sheet covers a range of compounds — general-purpose rubber, corrugated rubber for anti-slip and matting use, and silicone rubber, which is formulated to retain flexibility across a wider temperature range than general-purpose rubber compounds. Which compound is right depends on the fluid, temperature and pressure the gasket will actually see in service.
Compressibility, sealing behaviour and chemical resistance
Cork's natural cell structure makes it highly compressible, which lets it conform to a slightly uneven, warped or rough flange face better than a stiffer rubber sheet can — a genuine advantage on older or lower-precision equipment. Plain cork, though, has limited resistance to oil and fuel, which is why rubberized cork sheet — cork bonded with a rubber binder — is specified instead when the joint will be exposed to those fluids; the rubber binder improves both sealing performance and chemical resistance over plain cork.
Rubber sheet's chemical resistance and temperature tolerance depend heavily on the specific compound. Silicone rubber sheet is commonly specified for gaskets and seals in higher-temperature applications because it holds its flexibility across a broader temperature range than general-purpose rubber. Corrugated rubber sheet is generally used for anti-slip matting and flooring applications rather than as a compression gasket. The right rubber grade — and whether food-contact certification is needed — should always be confirmed against the specific compound before ordering, since not every rubber sheet grade carries that certification.

When to specify cork
- Static, low-to-moderate pressure joints where the flange face isn't perfectly flat
- General industrial sealing where oil and fuel exposure is minimal or absent
- Insulation or gasket panels where compressibility matters more than chemical resistance
When rubber is the more sensible choice
- Higher-temperature sealing, where silicone rubber sheet's wider temperature tolerance is needed
- Joints exposed to oil, fuel or other chemicals that plain cork can't resist
- Anti-slip matting or flooring applications, where corrugated rubber sheet is the appropriate form, not a compression gasket at all
Buyer's rule of thumb: if the flange face is imperfect and the fluid exposure is mild, cork — plain or rubberized depending on whether oil or fuel is present — is usually the more forgiving specification. If the joint runs hot or sees aggressive chemicals, specify the correct rubber compound rather than defaulting to cork and hoping it holds.
